Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – Big men Ben Jacobs and Brandon Winford each logged double-doubles for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team, while two others put up 10 or more points, but the Francis Marion Patriots capitalized on UNCP's turnovers to clinch the 78-74 Peach Belt Conference East Division victory on Thursday evening in the Smith University Center.
UNCP (13-11, 4-10 PBC) suffered its second-straight loss and fourth loss of the season in overtime, while Francis Marion (8-11, 5-8) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory to split the series between the two schools.
Winford finished the game with 16 points and was 8-for-13 from the foul line with a team-best 14 rebounds, as Jacobs also added 12 rebounds and 12 points. Sophomore Alex Bradley came off the bench for 31 minutes and collected a team-high 17 points and three of UNCP's five 3-pointers as Griffin Pittman added 10. The Braves finished the night outrebounding the Patriots on the offensive and defensive boards for a total 46 rebounds compared to Francis Marion's 35.
Evrik Gary put up a game-high 26 points with four perimeter shots and eight assists, while Trevonte Dixon tallied 21 points for the Patriots. Clark Major was the only member of the Francis Marion squad to finish the contest with a double-double as he grabbed 15 rebounds and 11 points. The Patriots shot 40.6 percent from the field and 81.0 percent from the charity stripe, while also hitting nine 3-pointers.
The Patriots led by its largest lead of 14 points with less than five minutes elapsed in the second half with a 16-2 score, but the Braves bounced back and cut the lead to seven entering into the half. The Black and Golf used a 6-0 run to start the second half and hold the Patriots scoreless until the 17:00 mark.
With 8:55 remaining in regulation, sophomore Quamain Rose knocked down a jumper to give the Black and Gold its first lead of the game, 51-50, and Bradley would send the game into overtime with a crucial 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining. However, Francis Marion proved to be too much in the final minute and came out with the four-point victory.
The Patriots scored 23 points off UNCP's 16 turnovers, while the Braves had 16 points on second chance shots.
The Braves will return home on Saturday for their final home contest of the 2013-14 campaign to matchup with Flagler (10-10, 4-9) in second part of the doubleheader set for 3:30 p.m.
