PEMBROKE – Sophomore Brandon Winford captured his second double-double of the week as he matched a career-high 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to assist in the 77-70 victory for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team over the visiting Flagler Saints on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference East Division action inside the English E. Jones Center.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for UNCP (14-11, 5-10 PBC) and registered as the first win in the month of February. Flagler (10-11, 4-10) dropped its 10th PBC game as the loss halted the Saints' two-game winning streak heading into the game.
Winford went 8-for-10 from the foul line and shot 46.1 percent from the field, while fellow sophomore Quamain Rose drained 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field. Forward Ben Jacobs clinched double-digits on the boards with 10 rebounds and seven points. Griffin Pittman and Alex Bradley each posted nine points for the Braves.
"We feel great about the win because they are not easy to come by," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "Flagler is a really good team, very well coached and tough to guard offensively. Congrats to the guys because they really earned it. It was not easy at times, but we grinded and did not shoot great, but we still found a way to get the win."
Flagler's Keith Matthews collected a team-high 18 points, while Dennis Diaz and Richard Brown added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Adam Jones held onto 13 rebounds, 11 of which were on the defensive boards.
The Braves controlled a disparity of eight rebounds as the squad ended the evening with 45 rebounds and suffered only seven turnovers compared to Flagler's nine. UNCP proved to be more dominating in the paint as the Black and Gold managed 32 points down low as well as 12 fast break points and 24 points off the bench, but the Saints drained eight perimeter shots including five in the first five minutes of the game.
Despite opening the game with the lead, UNCP found itself down by six points after the Saints hot shooting from the arc at the 14:30 mark, but a 10-3 run gave the Braves the advantage with eight minutes remaining in the half. A six-point lead heading into the locker rooms assisted the team in pulling off the win as the Black and Gold scored just one more point than the Saints in the final 20 minutes.
Prior to the tipoff, lone senior Blair Broom was honored during the Senior Day recognition for his contributions to the Braves.
The Braves will close out their final four games on the road beginning with Young Harris (12-7, 6-6) on Thursday inside the Recreation and Fitness Center in Young Harris, Ga.
