PEMBROKE – Behind the brace of Kierra Haney's 10th double-double of the season, the UNC Pembroke basketball team grabbed a 76-62 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Flagler, in the last contest of the season inside of the English E. Jones Center.
With the win, the Lady Braves (8-14, 4-11 PBC) snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 7-2 all-time against the Saints (9-12, 7-7).
Haney tallied 14 points on 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) shooting from the floor, and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Kamille Horne matched a career best, draining five 3-point buckets to total 15 points, while Avae' Hardy rounded out the double-figures scorers with 11 points.
The Lady Braves honored the lone member of the 2013-14 senior class today, Wayne Mack. Mack finished the day with three points, after a triple in the first half, and three rebounds. The Louisville, Ky., product played nine minutes, dishing out one assists and grabbing one steal.
The Saints were led by the 20-point performance of Williesha Spencer, who connected on 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) shots from the field, and hit all four of her shots from the charity stripe.
"We played great down the gate and I thought we built ourselves a nice cushion. I told the girls I was proud of them because we got down in the second half, but we kept fighting and we got back in the game," said UNCP head coach John Haskins.
UNCP opened up scoring at the 19:22 mark with a jumper from Hardy and the Black and Gold quickly took a 14-7 lead over the Saints. Jonissa Monley scored six-straight points and sparked an 11-2 UNCP surge, for the Lady Braves' largest lead of the game, 31-15, with just over five minutes remaining before halftime. Flagler was able to close the gap before the break with its own 11-1 run, bringing the score to 34-32 in favor of UNCP at halftime.
Flagler came out of the locker room hot and quickly regained the tempo after a jumper from Christina Brown gave the Saints a 43-39 lead five minutes into the second frame. The second half was a back-and-forth battle in the beginning that saw three lead changes and five ties in the first 10 minutes of action. UNCP was able to stretch its advantage back out to double digits, 60-50, after back-to-back free throws from Jasmine Huntley, and stayed in control the rest of the way until the final whistle.
After making just one shot from the free throw line in the first half, the Lady Braves found much more success at the stripe in the later part of game going 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) from the line. UNCP won the rebounding advantage, 47-39, and came away with three blocked shots compared to none from the Saints.
The Lady Braves head out on a four-game road swing this week with the first stop in Young Harris, Ga., for a matchup with Young Harris (15-4, 10-2) on Thursday. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Young Harris Basketball Arena.
