PEMBROKE – Visiting St. Augustine's used a shaky start by the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team early, and then held off a late rally by the Braves en route to a 9-5 upset win on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (20-7) committed a season-high four errors and left 16 runners stranded on the base paths, including 11 in scoring position. The win snapped a 33-game series losing streak for the Falcons (10-18) who defeated the Braves for the first time since March 8, 1995.

Dalton Knight doubled and scored once on a 3-for-4 tally to pace the Black & Gold, while Chad Whitehead singled in a run on a 3-for-5 hitting line. Three players registered a pair of hits for the Falcons, including Jamie Scott who also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to highlight a 2-for-5 night at the plate.

Pembroke native Alex Britt (1-1) surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in just 2-1/3 innings from the mound to take the loss for the Braves. Alex Edwards (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in a pre-determined rotation for St. Augustine's after yielding just two hits and five walks in four innings of work. Corey Brassington finished out the contest to grab his first save of the season as well.

UNCP took advantage of an error by the Falcons to plate a run in the bottom of the first and draw first blood, but St. Augustine's pounded out six hits and scored five times in the second to take the lead for good. The visitors had padded their lead out to 7-1 in the fifth, but the Braves had trimmed their deficit to just three runs, 7-4, by the end of the sixth.

After the Falcons had plated a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, the Braves loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Brassington induced a game-ending fly out by Jordan Edgerton to nix the threat.

UNCP will be back in action again on Wednesday when it treks to Hartsville, S.C., to battle Coker (16-9) in a 3 p.m. contest at Tom J. New Field.
