Box Score 2 RELATED: GRU Augusta Too Much For Softball In Game Two
PEMBROKE – Senior Natalie Klemann held the visiting GRU Augusta Jaguars hitless until the final inning and recorded her second shutout this season to assist the UNC Pembroke softball team in capturing the 3-0 victory in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening in the first game of the doubleheader at LRA Field.
UNCP (16-11, 4-1 PBC) posted its fourth conference victory, while GRU Augusta (12-22, 0-3) suffered its sixth-consecutive loss of the season.
Klemann (9-4) tallied her 11th complete game after going all seven innings without allowing a hit until the final three batters. The Apex native threw 109 pitches and gave up two hits, and struck out five of her 25 batters faced.
Junior Brea Hartley went 2-for-3 with two singles and a run, while five others nabbed one hit apiece to total seven UNCP hits. Centerfielder Karlee Wilson and first baseman Megan Hillard each scored with Wilson and Taylor Cloninger notching an RBI each.
GRU Augusta logged its only two hits in the seventh inning as both Kristen Bagley and Casey Rowland recorded base hits, but were left on base at the end of the inning. Pitcher Haley Birkle (5-11) suffered the loss in the middle for the Jaguars as she allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks.
The Lady Braves registered all three runs in the sixth inning as Hillard singled to reach base followed by a rocket to right filed by Hartley to runners on the corners. Cloninger sent her base hit blazing past the Birkle to score the opening run as HIllard slide across home plate. In the next at bat, Wilson brought home Hartley with her deep double to right centerfield and made her way home on an error for the win.
