Flagler Avoids Sweep, Rallies To Top No. 12 Baseball

Box Score

PEMBROKECody Trogdon gave the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team a 5-4 edge with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, but visiting Flagler tied the score in the sixth, and then plated the winning runs in the ninth, to salvage the weekend series with a 7-5 victory over the Braves on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback was just the third loss in the last 14 outings for UNCP (22-8, 11-7 PBC) who clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep of the Saints on Saturday. The triumph snapped a three-game skid for Flagler (16-13, 8-10) who now owns five victories over top 25 teams this season.

Daniel Fraga homered to key a 2-for-4 outing, while Zade Denton (2-for-3) and Brett Huffman (2-for-4) both turned in two hits apiece for the Braves who recorded 10 or more hits for the 25th time this season. Jake Taylor homered and drove in four runs on a 2-for-5 day at the plate for the Saints, who also got a four-hit day from Joe Post (4-for-5).

Jonathan Millsaps (0-1) yielded two earned runs on three hits in two innings of relief to take the loss for the Braves, while Kuehl McEachern (2-2) grabbed the win for the Saints after striking out two in 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Mike O'Reilly notched his fifth save of the campaign by surrendering one hit in a scoreless ninth.

Taylor gave the Saints a quick 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the top of the first, but Fraga and Edgerton both homered in the bottom of the frame to help knot the score back up. The Saints retook the lead on Matt Morningstar's RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, but the Braves used a RBI single from Brett Huffman and Trogdon's fly out to carry a 5-4 edge into the sixth.

Morningstar knotted the score back up with a sac fly in the sixth, and Flagler strung together three hits in the ninth, including Andrew Brodbeck's run-scoring double, to take the game's final lead. Taylor's RBI single up the middle two batters later would add an insurance run.

UNCP will continue a nine-game home stand on Wednesday when it welcomes Pfeiffer (18-12) to Pembroke for a midweek tilt. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Sammy Cox Field and fans attending the game are encouraged to wear the hat of their favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team.
