PEMBROKE – Run-scoring knocks by three different players helped the 20th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team stake claim to a 10-3 at the end of the fourth inning, but the Braves had to hold back a late charge by Chowan to finish off a twinbill sweep with a 10-8 victory over the Hawks on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
UNCP (14-5) moved to 9-1 in Pembroke this season with the win, while also logging its 12th-straight victory in the series with Chowan (1-14). It was the 14th consecutive loss for the Hawks whose only win this season came in the season opener on February 1 against Coker – a 2013 NCAA College World Series participant.
Drew Cole doubled twice, drove in a trio of runs and scored three times on a perfect 4-for-4 hitting performance for the Braves, while Victor Zecca scored twice on a 2-for-3 night at the plate. Newcomer Cody Adkins (1-for-3) doubled in a pair of runs for the hosts as well. Evan Holton drove in two runs and crossed the plate three times on a 2-for-3 outing for the visitors.
Jordan DeLoatch (3-0) struck out seven and strewed four hits and three runs (one earned) over five solid innings from the hill to grab the win for the Braves, while Zach Andrews registered the last out of the contest to pick up his second save of the season. Tyler Burden (0-2) yielded 10 earned runs on as many hits in just three innings from the mound to take the loss for Chowan.
UNCP scratched the scoreboard first on Jordan Edgerton's RBI single with one out in the first, but pushed the advantage out to 7-0 after sending 10 batters to the plate in the fourth. After trading 3-spots with the hosts in the fourth, Chowan whittled away at its deficit with a lone run in the sixth, and then took advantage of an ill-timed error by UNCP to plate four more runs in the seventh.
Evan Seymour's two-run double down the left field line got the visitors to within two runs and put the tying run at second base, but Andrews struck out Kyle Cross to slam the door on the rally.
The Braves will open up a four-game road trip on this weekend when they trek to northwest Georgia to battle Young Harris (9-10, 1-5 PBC) in a three-game series at Zell B. Miller Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and then close out the set with a 1 p.m. single dip on Sunday.
