Box Score 2 Related: Bader, Armstrong Atlantic Clinch Series With No. 17 Baseball
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 17th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scratched the scoreboard for four runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Braves warded off a weekend sweep at the hands of Armstrong Atlantic with a 7-2 victory over the Pirates in Sunday's series finale.
The triumph snapped an eight-game series losing streak for the Braves (31-15, 16-11 PBC) who had not tasted victory against the Pirates since the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals. The setback halted a nine-game winning skein for Armstrong Atlantic (24-15, 15-12).
Zade Denton doubled twice and scored once on a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Braves, while Brett Huffman registered a 3-for-4 outing with a run scored. Drew Cole (1-for-3, BB) and Ben Schmucker (2-for-4) both hit home runs for the visitors as well. R.J. Dennard walked and hit a solo homer to highlight a 2-for-3 hitting line for the Pirates.
Andy Sullivan (6-1) picked up the win for the visitors after allowing two runs (one earned) and nine hits in eight solid innings from the hill, while also striking out four. Justin Adkins (3-1) was handed his first loss of the season for the Pirates after yielding seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in just five innings of work.
Schmucker's two-run blast in the first capped a four-run frame for the Braves, but Armstrong answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to keep the visitors within reach. Huffman scored on an ill-timed wild pitch to give the Braves an insurance run in the fourth, and UNCP pushed its lead out to 7-1 with two more scores in the sixth, including a leadoff homer by Cole.
Dennard hit a one-out solo homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.
The Braves will close out a seven-game road trip, as well as snap the lid on the non-conference portion of their 2014 schedule, when they trek to Wilson on Tuesday for a midweek tilt against Barton (14-29). First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
