Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied back from an early 6-2 deficit to tie the game with two outs in the ninth inning, but Coker utilized a costly error to plate a run in the bottom of the 11th and hand the Braves a 7-6 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Tom J. New Field.
The setback marked the third loss in the last five outings for the Braves (27-12) who fell to 10-6 away from Pembroke this season. Coker (20-16) has now captured four of the last six series matchups with the Black & Gold, but still trail the all-time series, 20-8.
Ben Schmucker tripled and drove in a run on a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while Daniel Fraga homered and scored twice on a 2-for-6 hitting line for the Braves who registered their 32nd double-digit hit outing of the season in the setback. Drew Cole also turned in a 3-for-6 showing for the Black & Gold as well. Nine different players logged base hits for the Cobras, including Jack Leech who singled three times and scored once on a 3-for-5 plate performance.
Zach Andrews (2-4) limited Coker to just three hits in 2-2/3 innings of relief work, but saddled the tough-luck loss despite surrendering just a lone unearned run. Andrew Goot (2-4) was tagged with a blown save for the Cobras, but still picked up the win after allowing three hits and one earned run in four innings of work. He also struck out three.
A leadoff home run by Fraga, as well as a sac fly from the bat of Dalton Knight three batters later, gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Coker sent 10 batters to the plate in a key 6-run second inning that swung the momentum.
The Cobras plated another run to pad their lead out to 7-1 heading to the fifth, but the Braves struck for a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and then used Schmucker's two-out RBI single in the ninth to tie things up.
Dustin Russell reached via a leadoff error in the 11th and moved within 90 feet of home plate following Sammy Song's soft groundout two batters later. Jarren Donato hammered a single down the right field line in the ensuing at-bat to complete the scoring opportunity.
The Braves and Cobras will play the second half of the home-and-away series on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field in Pembroke. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
