Men's Soccer Falls To Georgia Southwestern, 1-0

Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga. – The visiting UNC Pembroke men's soccer team outshot Georgia Southwestern in the opening game of its Peach Belt Conference schedule, but the Hurricanes posted the only goal of the contest in the 14th minute to take the 1-0 shutout victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon in Americus, Ga.

Georgia Southwestern (2-2, 1-0 PBC) earned its first victory of the series between the two schools, while UNCP (0-3, 0-1) suffered its third loss of the season. The contest was extended due to three lightening delays and remained mostly cloudy throughout the remainder of the match.

Senior Kevin Vigebo and junior Branco Theis led the Black and Gold with a shared game-high four shots, while Tom Devitt and Sam Miles each tallied three. UNCP carried a 9-3 shot margin in the first half and added 10 more in the second half to finish the game with 19 total shots compared to Georgia Southwestern's eight.

Freshman goalie Kenneth Perkinson was behind four saves – two in each half – but gave up the lone goal of the game which was posted by Cesar Espinoza on the assist by DJ Garrett at the 13:31 mark.

"We created enough chances to win a lot of games today, but all credit to Georgia Southwestern," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "We have to continue to grow and improve."

UNCP tallied four shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Hurricanes accurately sent their opening shot into the back of the net. In the final 15 minutes UNCP aggressively fired seven shots towards the Hurricanes' net, but was unable to connect for a score.

The Hurricanes were led by Espinoza with a team-best three shots, while five others added one each. Garrett Blamire spent all 90 minutes between posts and collected 11 saves.

The Braves will face Brevard (2-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.in a neutral site battle in Rock Hill, S.C. on the campus of Winthrop.
