Men's Soccer Claims 3-3 Draw With Brevard

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite controlling a 3-0 lead after playing 59 minutes, the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team gave up a trio of goals in 17 minutes in the second half to finish in a 3-3 tie with region opponent Brevard on Tuesday at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, S.C.

UNCP (0-3-1) collected its standstill of the season, while remaining undefeated in the series with Brevard (2-2-1).

Senior Brett Luccia opened up UNCP's scoring campaign in the eighth minute on a speedy pass from Sam Miles inside the box for a shot on the left side to give the Braves a quick 1-0 advantage. The Braves used an onslaught of shots in the first half and connected on their second goal as Branco Theis found the shot off the rapid second rebound to send the ball into the net at the 37:42 mark.

The Black and Gold defense held the Tornadoes shotless through the first 45 minutes of action and drilled another 16 shots in the second half with Miles chipping in the third goal for the Braves in the 59th minute on a cross pass from Luccia from across the box for a close-range shot on the left side past a diving Bevard keeper.

Freshman goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson spent all 110 minutes in goal and logged four saves including two in the second half and one in each overtime period. Heath Turner logged time inbetween the posts for Brevard in the first half, while Juan Mascaro Jr. closed out the final 65 minutes with seven saves including five in the second stanza.

Miles led the Braves with 11 shots, which matched the same amount of shots as Brevard in the match, while Theis and Luccia added five. Clayton Gannaway, Tom Devitt and Nathan Legge posted three shots each.

"We played very well for long periods in the game, however, several mental lapses cost us the game," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "The game should have been closed out, but the lapses are costing us dearly."

Andrew Gallowitch put Brevard on the board with his first goal of the season as he rebounded the shot off the keeper and put the ball in the left corner of the net at the 62nd minute. The Tornadoes inched closer to the Braves with a 78th minute goal by Winston Haddock that was shot from 16 yards away on an open goal. Less than 11 minutes later, Jesse Omezi tied up the game with a chip shot from deep inside the box on the right side to send the game into overtime.

Both teams remained deadlocked after 20 minutes of overtime and finished the game with three cautions apiece and for combined 26 fouls as Brevard led the way with 16.

UNCP tallied each of the 12 corner kicks and registered a trio of shots on multiple of occasions inside the box.

The Braves will compete again on Saturday in the second game of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Montevallo (2-1-1, 0-0 PBC) at Varsity Grounds set for 7:30 p.m. Admission to all home UNCP soccer games is free.
