PEMBROKE – Courtney Crump found space in a crowded penalty area and found the back of the net just more than 6-1/2 minutes into the second overtime period to lift the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
The win kept the Braves (3-1-1, 2-0-0 PBC) at the top of the table in the Peach Belt Conference, while also giving the Black & Gold its second-straight win in the series with the Falcons (0-2-0, 0-1-0). It was just the second game of the season for Montevallo who had not seen game action since a 3-1 loss in its season opener at Mississippi College on September 6.
Crump and Katie Watkins both scored goals for UNCP, while Crump and Amber Watkins both logged assists for the hosts as well. Janae Aiken registered one save between the pipes for the Braves as well. Three players logged two shots apiece for the visitors, with Jade Pennock scoring the only goal for the Falcons.
UNCP limited Montevallo to just one look at the net in the opening half of play and scored at the 27:00 mark when Katie Watkins collected a rebound off a direct kick from her older sister and rifled a shot past UM netminder Katie Pearson for the early edge.
Despite spending much of the first half on their heels, the Falcons leveled the score in the 70th minute on Pennock's penalty kick that was awarded after a stray shot found the hand of a UNCP defender in the penalty area. UNCP nearly took the lead back four minutes later on a phenomenal shot from Amber Watkins, but Pearson was up to the task and made a diving save on the near post to keep her team in the game.
Aiken made an athletic save in the 102nd minute on a quality shot by Emma Greenwood that nearly snuck inside the far post, and Rae-Shawna Campbell nearly capped the ensuing transition with a score, but her shot found the woodwork and careened out of danger. Amber Watkins sliced through the Montevallo defense in the 107th minute, however, and dished off a pass to Crump who dribbled around a defender before connecting on a shot underneath a diving Pearson.
UNCP will return to action on Sunday when the Braves suit up to battle Emmanuel (1-3-0) in a 4 p.m. contest at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2014 UNCP soccer home games is free.
