MISENHEIMER – The visiting UNC Pembroke women's soccer team used a staunch defensive effort to make a 24th minute goal by Rae-Shawna Campbell stand up as the Braves won for the fourth time in the last five outings with a 1-0 victory at Pfeiffer on Tuesday.
It was the eighth-straight victory for UNCP (5-1-1) in the long-standing series with Pfeiffer (3-4-0), but the seventh time in the 13-game-old series that the Black & Gold has won by a single goal. It was the fourth loss in the last five games for the Falcons.
Campbell notched her fifth career game-winning goal and her second of the season with a little help from a Savanna Stiles corner kick. Stiles has now recorded eight career assists, including four in the last two games. Janae Aiken registered one save en route to turning in her second clean sheet of the campaign.
"It was not the prettiest of games, but we found a way to win," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We used a set piece to bail us out, but it is good to have the ability to score on set pieces in our bag of tricks. We didn't play our best and I didn't coach at my best, but we managed to win and that is a sign of a good team."
Both sides mustered just two shots apiece through the first 22 minutes of play, and an ensuing minute long scoring opportunity for UNCP proved to be the difference in the outing. Pfeiffer netminder Kate Halligan tallied one of her three saves on the day on a rifle shot by Courtney Crump at the 23:05 mark, but the shot created the game-deciding corner kick opportunity 41 seconds later.
Although out-shooting the Braves by a 10-8 disparity, the hosts registered their only shot on target just less than five minutes into the second half when Aiken proved up to the task on a quality strike from Gretchen Dettlinger. Pfeiffer logged six of the game's final 10 shots, but none were on goal.
The Black & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when it steps back into Peach Belt Conference play to host league rival Clayton State (6-1-0, 2-0-0 PBC) in the front half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2014 UNCP soccer home games is free.
