PEMBROKE – Rae-Shawna Campbell scored twice amidst a 3-goal outburst in the first half to lead the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team to a 3-0 blanking of visiting Queens in the season opener for both squads on Friday evening at Varsity Grounds.
The triumph kept the Braves (1-0-0) undefeated in its 4-game-old series with the Royals (0-1-0) and helped the hosts capture their 11th-straight season-opening win. The Black & Gold is now 11-3-0 all-time in season openers under head coach Lars Andersson.
It was the fourth career multi-goal game for Campbell who also logged six shots in the outing as well. Amber Watkins collected both a goal and an assist in 82 minutes of action, while newcomer Courtney Crump recorded a game-best eight shots and logged her first collegiate point on a first-half assist. Carolina Sanchez turned in an assist for the home team as well. Queens got a team-best three shots from a trio of players, including Jill Clark who came off the bench to register two shots on target.
Janae Aiken stopped seven shots on the way to grabbing her second career shutout between the pipes for the hosts. Emily Mager tallied nine saves, but surrendered three goals in the setback as well.
UNCP dominated the action early and put up six of the game's first seven shots, but did not get on the board until the 19th minute (18:44) when Sanchez placed a perfect service into the center of the penalty area and Campbell finished off the chance with a header past Mager. Watkins got into the scoring column less than seven minutes later (25:26) when she collected a rebound off a long shot from Crump and found nothing the back of the net from point blank range.
Watkins would be a factor in an insurance goal nearly nine minutes later (34:22) when she completed a long run and found Campbell who redirected a long pass with a one-timer that froze Mager on her heels.
Queens would have a majority of the play in the opening 20 minutes of the second half as the Royals out-shot the Braves 9-5 in the second stanza. The Royals' best chance to score, however, came in the opening period when Clark nearly connected on a 45-yard blast, only to have Aiken push the ball over the crossbar with an athletic save.
The Braves will be back in action again on Tuesday when the club heads up U.S. 74 for a regional battle with Wingate (0-0-1). Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the WU Soccer Complex.
