No. 18 Football Drops Season Opener At No. 14 Winston-Salem State

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM – Senior L.J. Stroman shattered a school record with 295 all-purpose yards, including a program-best 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter, but No. 14 Winston-Salem State scored points on four-straight first quarter possessions en route to a 38-7 win over the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke football team on Saturday evening at Bowman-Gray Stadium.

Stroman returned five kickoffs for 247 yards (49.4 yards/return) and two punts for 48 yards (24.0 avg.) to provide most of the highlights on the night for the Braves (0-1). John Rich caught three balls for a team-best 60 receiving yards, while Ronnie Moore registered seven tackles (five solo) for Code Black. Stroman registered six solo tackles as well, including two tackles for loss.

The two-headed quarterback tandem of Alabama transfer Phillip Sims and returning starter Rudy Johnson combined to throw for 229 yards and one touchdown on 24-for-38 passing on the night for the Rams (1-0). Marcel Caver hauled in a game-best 10 receptions for 154 yards and a first quarter touchdown as well.

"In the first quarter, I think that there were a lot of ups and downs and emotions and we just couldn't ever settle down and play like we are accustomed to," said UNCP head coach Shane Richardson. "I was a little disappointed that we were out of our rhythm. We came back there a little bit, but just couldn't sustain it."

An fumble by quarterback Seth Owen at the UNCP 36-yard line with just less than five minutes gone in the opening period set the Rams up for the first score of the game as Tyree Massey finished off a 5-play, 38-yard drive with an 8-yard dive into the end zone. Winston-Salem State would score touchdowns on each of its next two drives, and Alejandr Suarez's 44-yard field goal in the second quarter would pad the lead out to 24-0.

Stroman's 100-yard kickoff return 12 seconds later would prove to be the only points of the night for the visitors.

A 1-hour lightning delay accompanied a constant downpour that commenced just after halftime and slowed down play considerably. Maurice Lewis's 10-yard touchdown run with 2:17 left to play in the period would mark the only points of the second half.

UNCP will make its 2014 home debut on Saturday when it suits up to host region nemesis Fayetteville State (0-1) in the sixth annual Two Rivers Classic presented by Candy Sue's at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
