Box Score RELATED: Second-Half Shooting Pushes Women's Basketball Past Francis Marion
DAHLONEGA, Ga. - North Georgia's Stephanie Huffman tallied a double-double performance as she put up 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to halt the visiting UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, 59-50, in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Hall.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for UNCP (5-10, 3-5 PBC), but still kept the Braves with a winning record in the month of January, while North Georgia (13-4, 5-3) ended its losing streak with the league win.
Senior Kierra Haney and junior Mary Robinson each logged 12 points for the Braves, while senior Jazmine Kemp tallied eight points, eight rebounds and four assists with sophomore Airico Williams leading the team with nine rebounds. As a team, UNCP shot 30.2 percent from the field and knocked down 7-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe.
UNCP collected 18 points on second-chance attempts after pulling doing 14 offensive rebounds compared to only nine from North Georgia. The Nighthawks drained only one tree-pointer comparted to UNCP's five, but ended the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field.
Despite giving up the first points of the game, UNCP shook off the pressure and used a 9-2 run over the first five minutes to hold a five-point lead on the second of Robinson's treys, however North Georgia scored the next 12 points to again hold the advantage. Entering into the half, the Braves trailed by six, 30-24, and but cut the Nighthawks' lead to one after Avae' Hardy's three-pointer and Haneys layup in the opening minutes of the second stanza.
Kemp's three-point play tied the score for the second time and another layup by Robinson put the score at 34-34 with 16:25 left to play. As the game paced back-and-forth to a 42-42 score, North Georgia broke open the lead with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes and eventually extended its to its highest lead of 11 points with a minute left to play.
The Braves will look to rebound on Monday at home as the squad hosts Clayton State (12-5, 6-2) in a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest inside the English E. Jones Center.
