PEMBROKE – Saiquan Terry drained a clutch 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to help Clayton State take the lead for good as the Lakers used 53 percent shooting from the perimeter to key a 69-66 upset of the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team on Monday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.
The setback snapped a nine-game win streak for the Braves (16-2, 7-2 PBC) who also had their 11-game home win streak stopped in the process as well. It was the fourth-straight win for Clayton State (13-4, 6-3) who has now won 19 of the last 22 in the series with the Black & Gold.
Quamain Rose scored 18 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to pace the Braves who could not overcome a forgettable first half performance that saw them shoot just 21 percent from the field. Ben Jacobs came off the bench to score 11 points, while Brandon Winford tallied his 14th career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Terry fueled a game-best 21-point performance with six 3-pointers, while Kelsey Terry (no relation) added 18. Jamil McKee added 11 points for the visitors as well.
The Lakers led by as much as 12 after McKee's short jumper just 24 seconds into the final period, but the Braves steadily chipped away at their deficit and eventually grabbed a 47-46 lead on a layup by Rose with 9:31 left to play. The hosts would hold onto the lead for much of the next eight minutes of the contest, but 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions, including Saiquan Terry's with less than a minute left, gave the Lakers the lead for good.
The Braves had a chance to send the game into overtime on the last possession, but Rose's 3-pointer careened off the side of the iron to preserve the upset.
Despite shooting just 16 percent through the first 12 minutes of the opening half, UNCP trailed by just four points, 15-11, following a pair of free throws by Winford at the 8:01 mark. Clayton State would eventually lug a 30-20 lead into the locker rooms.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they open up a two-game trip at Georgia Southwestern (7-8, 2-6). Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. in the Storm Dome.
