Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga. – Darius Redding's dunk just 42 seconds into the second half helped put Georgia Southwestern up by 10, but the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team answered with a 19-2 run to key a 79-72 win over the Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in the Storm Dome.

The victory marked the fourth-straight road win for UNCP (17-2, 8-2 PBC) – its longest winning skein away from home since Jan. 12-24, 1994. It was just the second loss in the last five outings for Georgia Southwestern (8-9, 3-7) who has now dropped four of the last six in the series with the Braves, including two of the last three at home.

UNCP got double-figure scoring from five different players, including Brandon Winford's team-best 17 points and eight boards. Griffin Pittman added 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Ben Jacobs chipped in 14 off the bench. Quamain Rose scored 12 points, while freshman Brandon Watts tallied 10.

Georgia Southwestern pushed its lead out to double digits on Redding's dunk with 19:18 to play, but Winford's layup a short time later sparked UNCP on a game-changing 19-2 run that eventually gave the visitors a 51-44 advantage after a 3-pointer by Watts at the 13:53 mark. An 11-2 run by the Hurricanes midway through the period helped them reclaim the lead on a Redding's lay-in with 5:24 to play that made the score 65-63, but the Braves scored the next eight points to pull away for good.

Georgia Southwestern shot better than 55 percent in the opening half and led by as much as 13 points, 35-22, after Redding's fast-break layup at the 6:36 mark. The Braves scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to cut their deficit back to five, but Leonard's 3-pointer with 29 seconds left before the break gave the hosts a 40-32 edge heading into the locker rooms.

The Braves will close out a short two-game road trip on Wednesday when they trek to Augusta, Ga., to battle GRU Augusta (14-5, 6-4) in the second half of a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader inside Christenberry Fieldhouse.
