Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team used a late 14-2 run to tie the game on Avae' Hardy's 3-pointer with 4:49 to play, but home-standing Georgia Southwestern used clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to key a 67-64 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon in the Storm Dome.
The setback marked just the third loss in the last eight outings for UNCP (6-11, 4-6 PBC) who fell for just the second time this season when scoring 60 or more points. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for Georgia Southwestern (10-7, 4-6) who has now won consecutive games in the series with the Black & Gold.
Kamille Horne came off the bench to score a season-high 17 points for the Braves, who also got 12 points from Jasmine Huntley. Hardy registered 11 points, while Kierra Haney tallied a team-best 10 rebounds.
Yvonna Dunkley fueled a game-best 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the perimeter to pace the Hurricanes, who also got a double-double outing from Shanedra Lockett who turned in 11 points and 11 rebounds. Tiara Thompson chipped in 14 points for the hosts as well.
Dunkley's 3-pointer just more than six minutes into the second half helped the Hurricanes stake claim to a 47-36 advantage, but the Braves put together a 14-2 run four minutes later that helped them knot the score back up. The hosts got a big 3-pointer from Shanedra Lockett less than a minute later to take the lead for good. Down three with as many ticks left on the scoreboard, UNCP's 3-point play out of a timeout went for naught.
Georgia Southwestern grabbed an 18-12 lead in the first half after Dunkley's 3-pointer at the 7:16 mark, but the Braves battled back and eventually took a 22-21 lead on Hardy's perimeter shot three minutes later. A pair of free throws by Huntley with 1:14 left before the intermission gave the visitors a 28-25 advantage, but Georgia Southwestern used a 3-pointer from Ja'Quasha Sesler and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Danisha Green to take a 31-28 lead into the locker rooms.
The Braves will be back in action again on Wednesday when they close out a two-game road trip at GRU Augusta (3-14, 2-8). Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. inside the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
