PEMBROKE – Senior Jazmine Kemp etched her way into school history as she became the 20th member of UNC Pembroke's 1,000-point club on Saturday afternoon as the UNCP women's basketball team used dominating defense to upend Peach Belt Conference rival GRU Augusta, 59-33, inside the English E. Jones Center.
The Braves (3-8, 1-3 PBC) clinched their first PBC victory this season and extended their winning streak to two games after defeating St. Andrews on New Years' Eve, while GRU Augusta (2-8, 1-2) opened up 2015 with a loss and had its three game-winning streak in the series snapped.
Kemp joins her sister and former Brave, JaToya Kemp, who became the 19th member of the club on Nov. 17, 2010 and marks the first time siblings have been in either the men's or women's UNCP's 1,000 point clubs. The Elizabethtown native put UNCP on the board first with a layup just 12 seconds into the game and tallied her 1,000 career point with four seconds before the half as we went 4-for-7 in the first stanza from the field.
"She [Kemp] has been unbelievable! What a great kid and unbelievable student, just a model kid and a very good basketball player and probably one that doesn't want to be the star of her basketball team," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "She has been a great player for us and can do a lot of different things. She is just an invaluable player and it's going to be really weird after eight years not having a Kemp in the program."
Senior Avae' Hardy led the team with nine points on a trio of treys, while Kemp and fellow senior Kamille Horne each posted eight and sophomore Katelyn Mitchell chipped in seven. Kemp finished the game with five assists and three blocks, while Hardy followed with four assists and two steals. Forward Kierra Haney was a board shy of double-digit rebounds with Kemp and Airico Williams holding onto seven rebounds each. As a team, the Black and Gold shot 37.5 percent from the floor and matched a season-best 10 three-pointers as Williams, Horne and Eboné Stevens posted two apiece.
"First of all, I told our girls that it started with our energy defensively. I thought our energy was great in the first half defensively. We came out with a lot of energy and we played very hard and I think the statistics showed it," Haskins said.
The UNCP defense held the Jaguars to three field goals and three free throws to finish the half with nine points as the Braves carried a 18 point lead into the locker room. A drought for more than five minutes allowed UNCP to capitalize on a seven-point run as GRU Augusta knocked down only three points in the final 6-½ minutes in comparison to UNCPs 10 points.
UNCP opened up the second half on a seven point run to hold the Jaguars scoreless for more than four minutes that bridged the two halves and extended their lead to 27 points with 1:03 remaining until the final buzzer.
UNCP finished the contest by outrebounding the Jaguars 40-30 and put up 19 points on the 14 second chance rebounds. The win marked the second time this season the Braves have held an opponent to just nine total field goals, and a strong presence in the paint gave the Black and Gold 22 points including 25 off the 15 GRU Augusta turnovers.
Tavia Sykes collected a team-best nine points with Camille Gee and Joshlyn Belcher talling seven points for GRU Augusta. Forwards Kariel Hutt and Kelsey Fynaardt hung onto five rebounds.
UNCP will return to action on Wednesday when the squad closes out its home streak with a 5:30 p.m. contest against USC Aiken (6-6, 2-1) inside the English E. Jones Center.
