PEMBROKE – Double-digit scoring by seniors Mary Robinson and Chandrica Fuller along with Eboné Stevens and Jasmine Huntley delivered the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team a 25-point victory, 86-61, over The Apprentice School on Sunday afternoon on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The Braves (4-3) snapped a two-game skid with the victory and remained undefeated in the series with The Apprentice School (3-6) who suffered its second-consecutive loss. The victory marked the largest margin of victory for the Black and Gold this season.
Robinson collected the team's only double-double as she pulled down 12 rebounds and added 10 points, while Fuller tallied 15 points, Stevens had 14 and Huntley notched 13 to the Braves' scoring campaign. Jonissa Monley picked up eight rebounds, while 10 others had at least one board in the game. In the assists column, Airico Williams led the way with six, while Fuller snatched up four steals.
UNCP out-rebounded the Builders, 57-35, including 21 offensive rebounds which resulted in 22 second-chance points. The Braves also posted 22 points off 17 turnovers, logged 38 points in the paint and 49 from players off the bench.
The Apprentice School led the Braves by one point with less than three minutes elapsed in the first half, but UNCP turned on its jets and soared to a 28-17 lead at the end of the first period. UNCP entered into the half with a 47-26 lead after holding the Builders to a mere nine points in the second quarter. The Black and Gold shot 91.7 percent from the charity stripe in the first half and tallied five 3-pointers compared to one by the Builders.
In the second half, UNCP out-scored the Builders by seven in the third quarter and both teams finished the final 10 minutes with 13 points. The Black and Gold controlled a 31-point lead with 1:47 left in the third period and led for more than 37 minutes in the contest.
The Apprentice School was led by Ylexzis Traeger with 16 points, while Hayley Marshall and Kenya Wilkerson chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively. Both Quanisha Bruce and Wilkerson shared a team-high in rebounding with six, while Wilkerson had a team-best four assists.
The Braves will open up a five-game road stand and return to Peach Belt Conference action on Thursday when UNCP takes on Columbus State (5-1, 2-0 PBC) inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
