PEMBROKE – Junior Quamain Rose registered the program's first triple-double in 24 years as the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team used a dominant first half to key a 93-75 victory over visiting Armstrong State on Saturday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.
The triumph helped the Braves (21-4, 12-4 PBC) match a modern day school record with its 13th home win of the season, while also helping the Black & Gold keep pace with GRU Augusta for the top spot in the Peach Belt Conference East Division. It was the fifth-straight loss for the Pirates (6-16, 4-12) who have now lost eight of the last 11 meetings with the Black & Gold.
Rose finishing the outing with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, but Ben Jacobs came off the bench to register a team-best 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Brandon Watts added 16 points, while Griffin Pittman chipped in 15 for the Braves who posted a 50-34 disparity in the rebounding column, while also forcing 21 turnovers.
Emmanuel Tiluscar registered a game-high 27 points for the visitors, including a 10-for-11 success rate from the free throw line. Nicholas Scott and Jonathan Blair both tallied 15 points in the losing effort as well.
The Braves led 58-37 after a pair of free throws by Watts 3-1/2 minutes into the second half, but Armstrong State whittled its deficit all the way down to 12 points, 67-55, five minutes later. Rose's tip-in with 3:35 left to play capped a 14-5 run by the hosts that pushed the lead back out to a game-high 22 points.
The Pirates already trailed by double digits just less than eight minutes in the contest, but used a small scoring spurt to get to within six points, 18-12, with 10 minutes left before the break. A pair of mild runs over the last eight minutes of the opening period would give the Braves a 48-29 lead heading into the locker rooms.
UNCP will play its final two road games of the regular season next week, beginning with a Wednesday evening matchup at Flagler (9-14, 4-12). Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Flagler Gym.
