Strong Finish Helps Women's Basketball Down Armstrong State

With a tied score with 2:04 left to play in the game, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team nailed eight free throws on four Armstrong State fouls to snag a 67-58 victory in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon inside the English E. Jones Center.
 
The Braves (8-15, 6-10 PBC) clinched their second win in the month of February and moved into a tie for fourth in the PBC East Division, while the Pirates (11-12, 9-7) suffered their second-consecutive loss.

The Braves boast the nation's eighth-best (1st PBC) field goal percentage defense (34.7), and rank ninth nationally in scoring defense (55.5 points/game). The Braves have held nine opponents to 56 points or less this season, and have also held opponents to 35 percent shooting or worse in 14 outings. 

Senior Jazmine Kemp finished her 29 minutes with 15 points and six rebounds with two steals and a pair of assists, while sophomore Jonissa Monley came off the bench to put up 10 points and log two blocks and two steals. Kierra Haney led the Braves on the defensive board with nine innings, while fellow senior Avae' Hardy snatched up four steals.

Despite being out-rebounded, the Braves totaled 11 points off second chance shots, while UNCP picked up 28 points in the paint and 19 off Armstrong's 20 turnovers. The Black and Gold notched 34 points from its eight bench players and denied eight Armstrong shots with eight blocks.

UNCP started the contest with five quick points as Haney knocked down a pair of foul shots and Hardy nailed a three-pointer before the Pirates put a point up on the board. A 14-2 run gave UNCP a 13-point lead with eight minutes to play before the half, and eventually entered into the locker room with a six point win.

Armstrong trailed for a majority of the second half, but a 16-6 run tied up the score, however the squad committed four fouls to send the Braves to the line for the win as UNCP shot 77.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Alexia Somerset led the Pirates with 23 hits, while Shermika Harris added 13 and both Dee Hayward and Brigitta Barta tallied 10 points apiece. Somerset was the only player in the contest to tally a double-double as she pulled down 13 rebounds including 10 on the defensive end.

The Braves will hit the road for their second matchup of the season against Flagler (7-16, 4-12) in a 5:30 p.m. PBC-East Division contest inside the Flagler Gymnasium.
