Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Cody Adkins's one-out RBI single in the top of the 11th brought Ben Schmucker racing home with the eventual game-winning run as the third-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied back from a late three-run deficit to stun Montevallo, 7-6, on Friday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
Collins Cuthrell (2-for-5, RBI) and Drew Beaver (2-for-5, 2 R) both registered a pair of hits for UNCP (11-0, 4-0 PBC) who has now won its first 11 games for the third time (2005, 2011) under head coach Paul O'Neil. Zade Denton walked twice and hit a solo homer for the visitors as well.
Steven Knudson smacked three home runs to highlight a 3-for-5 outing for the Falcons (2-5, 0-1) who have now dropped three of their last four outings. Matthew Haskins (1-for-3) also walked and scored twice for the hosts.
Wes Helsabeck (2-0) struck out three batters and yielded two hits over two innings of relief to pick up the win for UNCP, while Lumberton native Alex Britt worked a scoreless 11th inning to grab his first career save. Joey Hume (0-1) allowed two hits and the go-ahead run in the 11th to saddle the loss for the Falcons, while Aron McRee surrendered four runs (three earned) in 3-1/3 innings from the hill and was tagged with his first blown save of the season.
Collin Dupree's RBI single with one out in the fourth helped Montevallo draw first blood, but the Braves scored twice on a pair of ill-timed wild pitches to take the lead in the fourth. Knudson hit 2-run bombs in both the fifth and seventh innings to help the Falcons surge out to a 5-2 advantage, however.
UNCP cut into its deficit on RBI knocks by both Beaver and Drew Cole in the eighth, and then knotted the game back up on Chad Whitehead's one-out single in the ninth. The Black & Gold took its second lead of the game on Denton's solo homer in the 10th, but Knudson led off the bottom of the frame with his third home run of the game to even things back up.
Montevallo got its first two runners aboard in the bottom of the 11th inning via walks to chase Helsabeck from the mound, but Britt came on and induced a game-changing double play ball off the bat of Dupree. After issuing an intentional walk to Knudson, as well as an ensuing fielding error that loaded the bases back up, Britt got Jeremy Hyde on a game-ending pop up to the infield.
UNCP and Montevallo will close out their weekend series with a 1 p.m. EDT doubleheader on Saturday.
