Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong State shot better than 44 percent from the field and used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to key a 72-60 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Arena.
The setback snapped a two-game win streak for the Braves (9-16, 7-11 PBC) who canned just five of their 22 perimeter attempts in the contest. It was the second-straight win for the Pirates (13-12, 11-7) who avenged a nine-point loss to UNCP on February 14 in Pembroke.
Jazmine Kemp scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second half to pace UNCP, while Kierra Haney notched her 15th career double-double with 15 points and a dozen boards. Shermika Harris and Brigitta Barta both put up a team-best 20 points for Armstrong State, while Dee Hayward contributed 13.
Katelyn Mitchell's 3-pointer at the 8:01 mark in the second half gave the Braves a late lead, but Lexy Schoonover's jumper on the other end sparked the hosts on a key 12-2 run that gave the Pirates a 66-57 advantage with 2:09 left to play. The run was aided by a 1-for-8 field goal success rate by the Braves, who also turned the ball over twice during the ASU run.
Armstrong State staked claim to a 26-13 lead in the first half after a 3-pointer by Harris with 7:34 left before the break made it 26-13, but UNCP scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to get back in it. Chandrica Fuller's layup right before the buzzer brought the Braves to within one point, 32-31, heading into the locker rooms.
The Braves will close out the regular season portion of their 2014-15 schedule on Wednesday when they take on I-95 rival Francis Marion (8-19, 5-13) in the front half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader inside the English E. Jones Center. The game will be preceded by Senior Night festivities as Kemp and Haney, as well as fellow seniors Avae' Hardy and Kamille Horne, are set to be honored.
