Women's Basketball Blows Past Francis Marion In Season Finale

Box Score

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team held visiting Francis Marion to just 11 percent shooting in the second half and used 12 3-pointers, including eight in the final period alone, to storm past the Patriots, 63-38, in the season finale for both squads on Wednesday evening in the English E. Jones Center.

The Braves (10-16, 8-11 PBC) finished the regular season tied for fourth in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division, but will not make a return trip to the PBC Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker (division record) with GRU Augusta. The Patriots (8-20, 5-14) closed the 2014-15 campaign with a four-game skid.

Eboné Stevens came off the bench to score a career- and game-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the hosts, while Kierra Haney closed out her collegiate career with a bang by tallying her 15th career double-double with 11 points and a career-best 22 rebounds. Fellow senior Jazmine Kemp flirted with a triple-double, but finished off her career in the Black & Gold with eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Haney's rebounding performance was two shy of the school record currently held by Regina Darden who pulled down 24 rebounds in a win over Armstrong Atlantic during the 1992-93 campaign. Alaysia Watts recorded a double-double for the Patriots as well with 11 points and as many rebounds.

Courtney Wood gave the game its fourth tie score on a short jumper with 10:12 to play, but the Braves took over after that, outscoring the Patriots by a 29-2 margin over the next nine minutes. The visitors would miss all 10 of their shots from the field over the stretch. The Black & Gold led by as many as 27 points in the second stanza after a 3-pointer by Stevens with 1:41 left made the score 63-36.

The Braves shot just 21 percent in first half action, but led by as much as nine points, 19-10, following a layup by Airico Williams at the 8:12 mark. However, a 3-pointer by Cy'erra Mills on the ensuing possession sparked the visitors on a 15-2 run that eventually gave the Patriots a 25-21 advantage heading into the locker rooms. The Black & Gold shot just 1-for-16 from the field over the final eight minutes of the opening period.
