Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. – Second-seeded and 23rd-ranked Montevallo shot better than 55 percent from the field and used a late 13-4 run to pull away for good as the Falcons ousted the 16th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team from the NCAA Tournament with a 78-59 victory over the Braves on Sunday in Tex Turner Arena.
The setback put the caps on one of the best seasons in school history for UNCP (26-6) who logged the second-most wins in school history in the process. Montevallo (26-8) will face ninth-ranked Mount Olive in Tuesday's NCAA Southeast Regional title game.
Four players registered double-figure scoring nights for the Braves, including Brandon Winford who turned in 14 points and added seven rebounds. Brandon Watts registered a dozen points, while Ben Jacobs came off the bench to score 11. Griffin Pittman put up 10 points and Quamain Rose chipped in 10 assists for the Black & Gold as well.
Ryan May recorded a game-best 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting for the Falcons, while Troran Brown and Bryant Orange tallied 15 and 10 points, respectively.
A short jumper by Ibrahim Johnson with 9:55 left gave the Falcons a 12-point advantage, but the Braves cut that deficit back to just seven points, 58-51, after Pittman's layup just more than three minutes later. Montevallo would answer with a 13-4 run to pad its cushion out to 71-55 with just more than three minutes left.
The Falcons scored the first eight points of the game to grab the early momentum, but the Braves strung together a 9-2 run minutes later and tied the score at 17 apiece on a jump shot by Reggie Cobia at the 9:51 mark. The Black & Gold took its first lead of the game, 30-28, on a pair of free throws by Jacobs with 1:17 left before the break, but two free throws by Orange right before the buzzer tied the game back up heading into the locker rooms.
NOTES: In terms of winning percentage (minimum 10 games played), UNCP's 2014-15 season (.813) ranks as the second-best season in school history, trailing just the 1990-91 squad that finished with a 27-5 (.833) clip … UNCP's six-member senior class finished with a 79-43 (.648) record and two NCAA Tournament appearances … The 79 wins matches the 1986-87 squad for the most wins by a senior class.
