PEMBROKE – North Georgia pounded out 11 hits and scored six times to help support a solid outing from left-hander Jacob Beauchamp as the visiting Nighthawks evened up the weekend series with the 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on a 6-1 win over the Braves in Sunday's nightcap at Sammy Cox Field.
Drew Cole doubled on a 2-for-4 outing to pace the Braves (16-6, 5-6 PBC) who also got lone base knocks from three other players as well. Collins Cuthrell doubled and scored on a 1-for-4 hitting line for the hosts as well.
Four players turned in multi-hit nights at the plate for North Georgia (14-6, 9-2), including Devin Gearheart who doubled twice and scored once on a 2-for-4 plate performance. Steven Tomlinson drove in a pair of runs on a 3-for-5 outing for the visitors as well.
Andy Sullivan (0-1) saddled his first loss of the season despite striking out three and allowing just six hits and a lone earned run over five strong innings from the mound. Beauchamp (4-1) struck out 11 and scattered five hits across his first complete game of the season.
Joey Cecere's two-out RBI single in the fifth gave North Georgia the lead for good, but the Nighthawks tacked up lone insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, before putting the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Cuthrell doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, and the Braves spoiled Beauchamp's shutout on Ben Schmucker's RBI groundout two batters later.
The squads will engage in the series rubber game on Monday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
