AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A one-out single by Bryce Evans in the fourth drove in the go-ahead run for third-ranked Flagler as the Saints used a strong outing from sophomore southpaw Michael Maiocco to finish off a weekend sweep of the sixth-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on a 3-2 win over the Braves on Sunday.
UNCP (14-5, 4-5 PBC) mustered just four hits on the day, with Drew Cole (1-for-3, R) and Zade Denton (1-for-4) providing the only RBI of the game for the Braves. Dalton Knight doubled on a 2-for-4 hitting line as well.
Evans plated a pair of runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate to pace the Saints (17-2, 10-1) who also got 2-hit days from both Kolin McMillen (2-for-4) and Igor Baez (2-for-4, R).
Starter Connor Pratt (2-1) struck out five in four innings of work, but took the loss anyway after also allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Maiocco (4-0) struck out 10 and yielded just three hits and a pair of earned runs over 6-1/3 strong innings from the hill to pick up the win for the Saints. Michael Hanks worked 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief to register his fourth save of the season.
Flagler got its first run of the game on a double steal in the first, but went out in front 2-0 on the first of two RBI singles from Evans. The Braves knotted the score back up on consecutive RBI knocks by Cole and Zade Denton in the third, but the Saints went back out in front for good on another run-scoring single in the fourth.
The Braves will close out a five-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker (6-10) in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Tom J. New Field.
