PEMBROKE – An outstanding run at the plate last week has earned senior Collins Cuthrell another recognition as the senior third baseman was decorated with Southeast Region Hitter of the Week honors on Tuesday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
A Rocky Mount native, Cuthrell registered a .500 (9-for-18) batting average in four starts last week to go along with six extra-base hits (4 HR), eight RBI and seven runs scored. He also drew three walks, compiled a .571 on-base percentage and a 1.278 slugging percentage (1.849) and was perfect in 10 defensive chances at third base. Of his nine hits over the span, six went for extra bases, including a home run in all four outings.
Cuthrell began his week by hitting a homer and scoring twice on a 2-for-3 outing as the 30th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team upended then-No. 3 Catawba on the road, and then hit .467 (7-for-15) in a series victory over Francis Marion over the weekend. Cuthrell doubled and homered on a 2-for-6 showing in the opener with the Patriots, and then hit a solo homer on a 1-for-4 day in the game two victory over FMU.
He finished off his week at the plate with a monster outing on Sunday that saw him turn in a 4-for-5 hitting line with a double, home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
Cuthrell and the Braves will be in action again on Tuesday when they suit up to battle Barton (17-23) in the front half of a home-and-home doubleheader with the Bulldogs. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
