Box Score PEMBROKE – Alex Conaway's 2-run homer in the third gave Lander a 6-0 lead, but the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke rallied all the way back and took the lead for good on Collins Cuthrell's two-run homer in the eighth as the Braves completed a weekend sweep of the Bearcats with a 14-11 victory in Sunday's series finale.
The triumph helped the Braves (34-10, 18-9 PBC) register their school record 18th Peach Belt Conference victory of the season, while also marking the 20th win in the last 25 outings for the Black & Gold. It was the fifth-straight loss for the Bearcats (21-26, 10-20) who fell to 10-15 on the road as well.
Cuthrell (2-for-5, 2 RBI), Dalton Knight (1-for-4, 2 R) and Chad Whitehead (2-for-5, 4 RBI) all hit home runs for the hosts who turned in their 22nd-straight game with 10 or more hits. Drew Beaver drove in four runs and scored twice on a 3-for-4 showing for the Braves as well.
Conaway, Thomas Berry and Matt White all registered a trio of hits to lead Lander.
Senior Jordan DeLoatch (2-0) scattered six hits and a pair of runs over five solid innings of relief work to pick up his second win of the season for the Black & Gold. Brandon White (2-4) took the tough-luck loss for the visitors despite allowing five unearned runs on three hits and as many walks.
Despite being limited to just one hit and a lone run through the first three innings of the contest, UNCP registered at least one run over the next five innings to fuel the comeback. Down 8-4 through six complete, the Braves used a two-run homer from Whitehead in the seventh, as well as a bases-loaded walk later in the frame, to pull to within a lone score.
Billy Vaughn reached on a throwing error to start the eighth and open the flood gates, however. A passed ball allowed Vaughn to cross the plate with the game-tying run, but Knight drew a five-pitch walk with the next at-bat to set the table for Cuthrell's no-doubter over the left field fence. The hosts would add four more insurance runs in the eighth, including two on a two-out RBI single by Beaver.
The Braves will close out a four-game home stand on Tuesday when they suit up to battle U.S. 74 rival St. Andrews (25-19) in a 6 p.m. outing at Sammy Cox Field.
