PEMBROKE – The 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up a pair of runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings and then held off a ninth-inning rally by visiting St. Andrews on the way to an 11-10 win over the Knights on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The triumph marked the eighth-straight victory for UNCP (35-10) who improved to 25-3 at home this season as well. St. Andrews (25-20) has now lost 14-straight games in the series with the Braves.
Zade Denton doubled, homered and scored three times on a 2-for-5 night at the plate, while Drew Cole walked, homered and scored twice on a 1-for-4 showing. Four other Braves turned in 2-hit nights as well.
D'Aundray VanSlyke (3-for-5, 2 R) and Jeremy McDowell (3-for-5, 2 RBI) both tallied 3-hit outings to pace the Knights.
Jimmie Davis (1-0) struck out one and surrendered just a lone base hit in 1-1/3 innings of relief work to grab his first win in two years, while Alex Britt recorded the game's final two outs to notch his fifth save of the campaign. Grant Snyder (0-1) yielded two earned runs on three hits and as many walks to take the loss for the visitors.
Cody Adkins drew a bases-loaded walk and Billy Vaughn followed with a two-run single to give the Black & Gold a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the third, but St. Andrews rallied for three runs of their own in the fourth, and then tied it on a sac fly by Trey Byrd in the fifth.
Ben Schmucker's two-run single with two outs in the sixth put the hosts up for good, but UNCP added a pair of insurance runs on Cole's two-run dinger in the seventh.
The Braves will be back in action again this weekend when they head to Augusta, Ga., to battle GRU Augusta (15-24, 8-15 PBC) in a key Peach Belt Conference series. The squads will open up the weekend with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday evening.
