Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Clint Hardy's one-out solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a late-inning comeback effort by GRU Augusta and lifted the Jaguars to an 8-7 upset over the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Friday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Chad Whitehead singled three times and drove in a pair of runs on a 3-for-4 night at the plate for the Braves (35-11, 18-10 PBC) who had their eight-game win streak snapped with the setback. Four other players recorded 2-hit nights for the visitors as well.
Hardy doubled, homered and scored twice on a 2-for-6 night for the Jaguars (16-25, 9-15), while Kevin Dodson doubled and scored twice on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Connor Gilbert plated a trio of runs on a 2-for-3 effort, including a key two-run single in the ninth.
Alex Britt (4-2) blew his first save opportunity of the season and took the loss for UNCP after surrendering three earned runs on four hits in 2-1/3 innings of relief work. He also struck out three. Reliever Tristan Jones (2-6) struck out five and yielded just a lone unearned run in 6-2/3 innings from the hill for the hosts.
GRU Augusta erased an early 2-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the Braves used four hits and a pair of costly fielding errors to score four times in the fourth and once more in the sixth to take a seemingly comfortable 7-3 advantage.
Dodson's two-run double in the sixth brought the hosts to within a pair of runs, and a ninth-inning rally sent the game into extras. GRU Augusta loaded the bases with its first three at-bats in the final frame of regulation to set the table for a game-tying single from Gilbert.
The squads will continue their three-day series on Saturday at Lake Olmstead Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
