GRU Augusta Shuts Out No. 12 Baseball, Clinches Series

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta tacked up lone runs in four different innings behind a two-hit shutout from Matthew Kuhlenberg and the Jaguars clinched their weekend series with the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team with a 4-0 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

UNCP (35-12, 18-11 PBC) got singles from Dalton Knight (1-for-3) in the second inning and Billy Vaughn (1-for-4) in the sixth, but were blanked for the first time this season. Drew Taylor doubled in drove in three runs on a 3-for-4 outing to pace the Jaguars (17-25, 10-15).

Zach Andrews (5-1) struck out a trio of Jaguars, but was sent to his first loss of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5-1/3 innings from the mound. Kuhlenberg (3-4) struck out five and allowed just five base runners over his first career complete game.

Taylor's run-scoring single with one out in the first proved to be the only offense the hosts would need, but Taylor provided two more insurance scores on RBI knocks in the third and fifth innings as well. Hunter Boose's RBI double in the sixth would cap the scoring on the day.

The Braves had their best chance to score after putting runners at the corners with none out in the second, but Kuhlenberg struck out the next two batters he faced, and then induced an inning-ending groundout. He closed out the outing by retiring the final nine batters he faced.

The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
