No. 12 Baseball Wards Off Sweep, Tops GRU Augusta In Series Finale

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scored in each of the first five innings and got a clutch relief outing from Jordan DeLoatch to evade a weekend sweep with a 7-4 win over GRU Augusta on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Ben Schmucker doubled, tripled and drove in a pair of runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate to pace the Braves (36-12, 19-11 PBC). Three other players tallied 2-hit outings for the visitors as well.

Clint Hardy (2-for-3, RBI) and Drew Taylor (2-for-2, RBI) both turned in a pair of hits for GRU Augusta (17-26, 10-16).

DeLoatch (2-0) spelled starter Logan Cook with one out in the fifth and picked up the win after limiting the Jaguars to three hits and a lone run over 3-2/3 innings of work. Alex Britt recorded the last three outs of the contest so pick up his sixth save of the season. Frank Warren (1-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in just 1-1/3 innings from the hill to saddle the loss for the hosts.

UNCP took a 7-0 lead after Drew Cole's solo homer in the fifth, but the Jaguars scored three times in the bottom of the frame to make things interesting. GRU Augusta added lone runs in the seventh and ninth innings to provide the final.

The Braves will return home again on Wednesday when they close out the regular season play against U.S. 74 rival Wingate (29-21) at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
