COLUMBUS, Ga. – Berry Aldridge's one-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth gave 15th-ranked Armstrong State its first lead of the ballgame and the Pirates moved into Sunday's Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game with a 7-6 victory over the 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Saturday evening at Ragsdale Field.
The setback means the Braves (38-13) will now have to await Sunday evening's NCAA Tournament selection show to find out if they will receive one of three available at-large bids for the NCAA Southeast Regional. The second-seeded Pirates (34-13) will battle eighth-seeded Georgia College (32-17) on Sunday for the league's automatic berth into the postseason.
The Braves got at least one base hit from nine different players on the night, with Zade Denton and Chad Whitehead both turning in 2-for-4 performances. Five Pirates tallied multi-hit showings in the outing, including a 3-for-4 night from leadoff hitter Tyler Avera.
Alex Britt (5-3) allowed just one hit in an inning of relief, but took the loss anyway after yielding the four-bagger in the last frame. Tyler Graham (4-1) picked up the win for Armstrong despite allowing a run on two hits and a pair of walks in 1-2/3 innings of relief. He also struck out two.
UNCP sent nine batters to the plate in a 4-run first inning, but Armstrong used a solo homer from Zach Lance in the bottom of the second, as well as a 3-run fifth inning, to knot things back up. The Braves regained the lead on back-to-back RBI singles by Nolan Pierce and Whitehead in the top of the eighth, but the Pirates used a solo homer from Matt Wisniewski and a costly wild pitch to even things back up in the bottom of the frame.
Sunday's NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. and can be viewed via a live video stream at NCAA.com.
