AMERICUS, Ga. –
Izzy Evans and
Jordan Walshaw each scored a pair of goals as the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team stayed perfect in Peach Belt Conference play with a 5-1 victory at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon.
The triumph gave the Braves (4-4-0, 2-0-0 PBC) their first victory away from Pembroke this season, while also helping the Black & Gold claim its ninth win in 11 series meetings with the Hurricanes. It was the fourth-straight loss for Georgia Southwestern (1-7-1, 0-3-0) who fell to 0-6-0 at home this season as well.
Walshaw logged a game-best five shots and netted his league-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season to pace the Braves, while Evans tacked up his first career multi-goal outing to aid the effort as well. Netminder
Lucas Gusmao registered a season-best eight saves in 79 minutes between the pipes.
Walshaw's 14
th minute (13:45) penalty kick goal gave UNCP the early edge, but the Hurricanes stormed back to even the game back up nearly eight minutes later (21:39) on a score by Jonathan Sayers. Evans would give the visitors the halftime lead 61 seconds later, however, when he dribbled through the defense and beat goalkeeper Joshua Swift who was charging out in an attempt to make a play.
Despite a close game at the break, the Braves poured it on in the second half. Walshaw made it a 3-1 game on another penalty kick in the 56
th minute (55:16), and Evans scored just less than four minutes later (59:00) to give UNCP a three-goal cushion.
Hunter Gregory capped the scoring on the day with a goal at the 72:43 mark.
The Braves will return home again on Wednesday when they welcome PBC rival Francis Marion (2-6-1, 1-2-0) to Lumbee River EMC Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Admission to all 2016 UNCP home soccer games is free.
