Cuarezma’s Golden Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.Jordan Walshaw scored a pair of goals less than four minutes apart late in the second half to help the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team battle back from a 2-0 deficit, and Johannus Cuarezma's Golden Goal with 35 seconds left in double overtime sent the Braves past the Saints, 3-2, on Monday afternoon.

It was the first series victory for UNCP (5-8-0, 3-4-0 PBC) who improved to 1-8-2 all-time against Flagler (5-7-1, 4-3-0). The triumph also snapped a four-game skid for the Black & Gold.

Walshaw rattled off a career-high nine shots (6 on target) and netted his Peach Belt Conference-leading 12th and 13th goals of the campaign to pace the visitors, but the day belonged to Cuarezma who tallied just his second career goal and his first since Sept. 6, 2015, in a win over Brevard.

The Saints took the game's first lead on a 27th minute goal by Jackie Kay, and then struck again just more than eight minutes into the second half on a corner kick that was finished off by Eamonn Moore. Down 2-0, however, UNCP went to work and cut its deficit in half when Walshaw collected a loose ball in the penalty area and fired a shot past FC goalkeeper Lex Craggs.

Walshaw struck again nearly four minutes later (79:04) to even the game back up.

The Black & Gold out-shot the hosts 3-1 in the first extra period, including a strike just three seconds into overtime that was collected by Craggs. Flagler was able to connect on a pair of headers in the second overtime period that put UNCP netminder Lucas Gusmao to the test, but the Braves had the last laugh, scoring at the 109:25 mark when Cuarezma redirected a corner kick from Izzy Evans.

UNCP will continue its regular season-ending three-game road trip on Wednesday when it heads to Aiken, S.C., to lock horns with USC Aiken (2-12-0, 1-6-0) at Pacer Pit. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
