BUIES CREEK – The UNC Pembroke swimming and diving squad put five different swimmers up against Division I Campbell Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Aquatic Center, but the Camels' depth pushed the hosts to victory.
I am really proud of the women today," head coach
Rhonda Blank said. "We were up against some tough competition and they stayed tough. Campbell put a different swimmer in the pool in each event and our women kept battling."
UNCP junior
Gina Zhang was unfazed by Division I competition, as the Beijing, China native tied for first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:06.19. It was her first time swimming that event this season. Zhang grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 individual medley in 1:11.18 and touched fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:55.33.
Junior
Sonyaliz Goveo finished third in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in times of 1:14.86 and 1:34.85, respectively.
"Sonya is our team captain and she really proved that in the pool today," Blank said. "She made the team proud swimming the IM for the first time today."
Sophomore
Kelsey Williams took fourth in three different events, the 200 freestyle (2:25.09), 50 freestyle (29.06) and 100 freestyle (1:04.35). All three times were season bests for Williams.
"Kelsey continues to improve on her times and that's great to see," Blank said.
Sophomore
Taylor Lusk and junior
Alexys Pagan each swam the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Lusk touched fifth in both events, while Pagan grabbed a pair of sixth-place finishes.
"Alexys is improving by the day and is quickly becoming the voice of reason on our team," Blank said. "She is a true leader in and out of the pool."
The UNCP relay squad of Zhang, Lusk, Goveo and Williams finished third in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 2:02.06.
The Braves are back in the pool Nov. 18 for a 4 p.m. battle with Chowan in Murfreesboro that will wrap up the 2016 portion of the schedule. UNCP opens 2017 with a tri-meet on Jan. 14 with Greensboro and Sweet Briar.
