AMERICUS, Ga. – Host Georgia Southwestern knocked down nine 3-pointers and outscored the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad in all four quarters Monday en route to a 66-55 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) win inside the Storm Dome.
It's the fourth-consecutive loss in the series by the Braves (5-3, 1-1 PBC), who shot a season-low 30 percent from the floor. The Hurricanes (7-2, 2-0 PBC) are one of five league teams that remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Black & Gold trailed by seven at halftime and as many as ten in the second half, but cut the deficit to four with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. However, Georgia Southwestern used a 7-0 run down the stretch to extend their advantage to 64-53 with less than 60 seconds on the clock and hit four free throws in the final minute to put the game away.
UNCP's trio of 3-pointers was a season low, hitting on just 3-of-19 from long range. Each side turned 15 turnovers into 17 points, while the 'Canes held a 48-46 advantage on the glass. The hosts assisted on 22 of their 25 made baskets and racked up eight blocks. The Braves grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and canned 17 second-chance points.
Jillian Ebron and Lashonda Prichard each poured in nine points for UNCP and Prichard added six rebounds and an assist.
Jonissa Monley tacked on seven points and three rebounds, while
Airico Williams hauled in a team-best nine boards.
Gabby Figgers paced the hosts with a game-high 14 on 4-of-6 shooting, all from behind the arc. Chanice Whitton put together a double-double with 10 points and a dozen rebounds.
The Braves jumped out to a 7-1 lead just two minutes into the game, but the Hurricanes went on a 15-2 run from there to grab a 16-9 lead. UNCP had its final lead at 27-25 late in the second quarter, but Georgia Southwestern closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to haul a 34-27 advantage into the locker rooms.
The Black & Gold will take a 10-day break from game action for the holidays before returning to Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court December 30 for a 2 p.m. meeting with Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders (5-3) are losers of two straight after beginning the season with wins in five of their first six. The Braves lead the all-time series 5-4 and have won three-straight meetings, including a 72-51 triumph last season.
