SAVANNAH, Ga. – Behind double-doubles from Mary Robinson and Jonissa Monley, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad took down Armstrong State 79-60 Saturday evening at Alumni Arena.
The Braves grabbed their 10th win of the season and snapped a three-game skid with the victory. UNCP is now 10-15, 5-13 PBC, while the Pirates fell to 15-12, 7-11 with the loss and have now lost two straight. The Black & Gold and Armstrong State have now split the last 12 meetings between the teams.
Robinson was 6-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc to finish with 23 points. The point total is a career high for the senior, as are the four made 3-pointers. It's the fourth double-double of her career.
Monley notched her 11th-career double-double on 20 points and 15 rebounds. She connected on 8-of-15 shots and was just two rebounds off her career best.
Jasmine Huntley joined the double-figure scoring parade, pouring in 13 points.
The opening quarter stayed tight throughout, ending with the squads tied at 17. A low-scoring second quarter saw the Braves outscore the Pirates 12-8 to stake claim to a 29-25 halftime lead.
UNCP heated up in the third quarter before striking fire in the final frame. The Braves put up 22 points in the third and erupted for 28 in the fourth. The Black & Gold led by seven, 51-44, at the end of three and the closest Armstrong State came in the fourth was five.
The Braves shot an impressive 53 percent (26-of-49) from the field and 54 percent (7-of-13) from long range. Armstrong State could not find its shooting stroke, connecting on just 34 percent (20-of-59) of shots and 28 percent (5-of-18) from behind the arc.
UNCP outrebounded the Pirates 40-34 and were dominant inside, scoring 18 points in the paint to Armstrong State's 12.
The final game of the season for the Black & Gold is Wednesday at Francis Marion. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Smith University Center. The Braves defeated the Patriots 75-63 in Pembroke Jan. 13.
