COLUMBUS, Ga. – Seventh-ranked and Peach Belt Conference-leading Columbus State scored five times in the first two innings to grab an early advantage, but needed the services of three unearned runs in the seventh to silence a rally and hold off the UNC Pembroke baseball team, 11-5, in Friday's series opener at Burger King Stadium.
Nick Salisbury (3-for-4, 2 R) and Drew Beaver (2-for-4, 2 RBI) both homered for UNCP (26-21, 12-16 PBC) who tacked up 10 or more hits for the 33rd time this season in the setback. Roberto Rivera walked and tallied a RBI groundout, but had his 24-game hit streak snapped on a 0-for-4 night at the plate.
It was the 16th-straight victory for Columbus State (38-10, 22-6) who got home runs from both Mike McClellan (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Justin Evans (1-for-4, 2 RBI) in the triumph. Ryan Ihle doubled and scored twice on a 3-for-5 plate performance as well.
Jesse Stinnett (6-4) struck out four Cougars, but yielded nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 6-2/3 innings from the hill to take the loss for the Braves. Brandon Koehler (9-1) picked up the win for the Cougars despite allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in just 6-2/3 innings of work. He also struck out four.
UNCP trailed 5-0 after the first two innings, but had whittled that deficit down to just a trio of runs after Beaver's leadoff homer in the sixth. Columbus State countered Beaver's bomb with Ihle's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame, but the Braves plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pull to within two scores, 7-5.
The hosts used a crucial error to get a runner into scoring position with its leadoff at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, but Stinnett retired the next two Cougars and appeared to have gotten out of the jam. A two-run homer by Evans in the next at-bat would counter that notion, however. Consecutive doubles off of reliever Logan Cook would push across another insurance run minutes later.
The squads will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Burger King Stadium. Alex Britt (4-1, 5.89 ERA) is scheduled to counter Columbus State right-hander Albert Harless (5-2, 5.70).
