PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's soccer team scored a pair of goals 63 seconds apart late in the second half to help support a stellar defensive effort that lifted the Braves to a 2-0 blanking of visiting Brevard on Thursday evening at Varsity Grounds.
The victory marked the first of the
John Miglarese era in Pembroke, and helped the Black & Gold (1-1-0) hand Brevard (2-1-0) its first loss of the campaign. UNCP is now 3-0-0 all-time against the Tornados.
Rookies
Hunter Gregory and
Ties van den Eijnde both netted their first collegiate goals, while freshman goalkeeper
Lucas Gusmao picked up his first career clean sheet, while also registering five saves. Gregory tacked up a team-best two shots in the outing as well.
The Braves registered just three shots through the first 79 minutes of play, but found their mojo with four quality strikes over the next five minutes. Gregory got the hosts off the mark at the 82:56 mark when he found space from distance and fired a shot past a diving Heath Turner for the 1-0 advantage. Van den Eijnde, an import from The Netherlands, just 63 seconds later when he collected a rebound off of a free kick and found the back of the net as well.
UNCP will return to action on Saturday when they make the short trip to Belmont to lock horns with Belmont Abbey (0-1-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
