UNC Wilmington Slips By Women’s Basketball In Exhibition Tilt

WILMINGTON – Division I UNC Wilmington put back 20 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds and turned 14 UNC Pembroke turnovers into 24 points to turn back the upset-minded Braves 73-64 in exhibition action Saturday afternoon at the Trask Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER
-Alecia Hardy's layup with 6:39 on the clock gave the Braves their largest lead of the game at 10-5 and Hardy knocked down a jumper at the 4:10 mark to push the lead back to five (15-10).
-The Seahawks closed the quarter on a 12-2 run in the final 2:42 on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and a 5-for-5 clip from the free-throw line.

SECOND QUARTER
-UNCP pulled within two on an Avery Locklear long ball with 7:16 remaining in the half, but UNC Wilmington closed the period on a 17-7 run to haul a 44-34 lead into the break.

THIRD QUARTER
-The hosts built up a 16-point advantage, their largest of the game, when Lacy Suggs converted a three-point by after being fouled on a made layup at the 5:35 mark.
-The Black & Gold bounced back with a 9-1 run to close the gap to eight at 58-50 before the Seahawks scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 62-50 with 10 minutes to play.

FOURTH QUARTER
-UNC Wilmington kept its foot on the gas throughout the fourth and led by 13 with under a minute to play before a Nyla Allen layup and two Melanie Horne free throws in the final 39 seconds brought the final tally to 73-64.

NOTABLES
-Saturday's game was the first meeting between the sides since the 1986-87 season and the Seahawks have now won the last four meetings in the series.
-The Braves shot 41.4 percent from the floor, including a 50-pecent clip in the first half, while UNC Wilmington hit at a 33.3-percent mark overall.
-The Seahawks were called for just 14 fouls to UNCP's 25, which sent the hosts to the charity stripe for 30 free throws, compared to only 11 for the Braves. Both sides knocked down over 70 percent of the freebies.
-The UNCP reserves accounted for 29 points, while the Seahawk bench tacked on just three points. The Braves held a 20-14 advantage in points in the paint.
-Allen paced all Braves with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and hauled in a team-best eight rebounds, while Horne added 11 points and Hardy tacked on nine. Aliyah Farmer littered the box score with five points, five boards and three blocks.
-Three Seahawks, Madison Raque (24 points), Jenny DeGraaf (19) and Timber Tate (15) accounted for 58 of the hosts' 73 points.

UP NEXT
The Braves return home for their second countable contest of the season on Friday when regional rival Mount Olive travels to Pembroke. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Trojans (0-2) fell to Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne in the season-opening South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas challenge after dropping a 102-47 contest to North Carolina in an exhibition game. UNCP leads the all-time series 24-4 against Mount Olive, but the Trojans won a 62-56 meeting last season.
