COLUMBIA, S.C. - The UNC Pembroke swimming and diving squad set a school record in 10 of the 13 events on Saturday afternoon in the season-opening meet at Columbia (S.C.), highlighted by two event wins each by freshmen
Megan Hunter and
Abigail Wood, to fuel the Braves to their second highest-scoring meet in program history.
Despite the host Koalas winning the meet by a 149-83 score, the second-year Braves showed plenty of improvement after ushering in a new freshman class this offseason.
In her first collegiate action, Hunter touched the wall first in two of her three individual events and set school records in both first-place finishes. The Chesterfield, Virginia native swam the 200-yard freestyle in a new school record time of 2:11.04 before setting a new standard in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:51.16. Hunter wrapped up her individual slate with a third-place mark in the 100-yard individual medley (1:15.51).
Hunter's classmate Wood was just as impressive in her collegiate debut, setting two school records of her and claiming two event victories. The Durham, North Carolina native touched the wall just .02 seconds ahead of the competition in a 50-yard backstroke win to set a new school record of 28.56. She followed that up with a triumph in the 100-yard butterfly, blazing through the event in 1:06.52, which was over four seconds clear of second place. Wood came just one second from sweeping her three events, as the freshman recorded a runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke, but still set a new UNCP record in 1:02.67.
Freshman
Victoria Brosseau joined the record-setting party with a trio of new marks in the 50-yard freestyle (27.91), the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.00) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.12). She finished third, third and second in the respective events.
Three other program records fell on Saturday, including the 50-yard breaststroke mark, which was toppled by freshman
Selena Rodriguez in a time of 36.13. Returner
Sonyaliz Goveo eclipsed her own school record in the 50-yard butterfly, touching in third place at 32.72. The 200-yard medley relay team of Wood, Rodriguez, Goveo and Hunter also surpassed the previous school record in a runner-up finish in 2:05.21.
The Braves are back in the pool next Friday and Saturday (October 6-7) at the Converse Invitational. Day one action begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Marsha H. Gibbs Fieldhouse and Saturday's festivities will start at 10 a.m. in Spartanburg.
