COLUMBUS, Ga. – Columbus State scored 16 points off of 20 turnovers by the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team and used a big fourth quarter to pull away for good on the way to a 72-64 victory over the Braves on Monday at the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
The setback marked the fifth-straight road loss for the Braves (2-5, 1-1 PBC) in the series with Columbus State. The Cougars (5-2, 2-1) have now captured two of their last three outings and improved to 3-0 at home in 2018-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED |
1ST QUARTER |
Melanie Horne's 3-pointer with six minutes left in the first quarter gave the Braves a 7-5 lead, and Tee Graham pushed the advantage out to 10-5 with a trey just 45 seconds later. The Braves would go scoreless for the remainder of the opening period, and the Cougars would eventually take an 11-10 lead into the second quarter. |
2ND QUARTER |
Columbus State continued a big run into the second quarter andeventually took a 23-13 lead on a jumper from Anna Stewart with 4:50 left before the break. The Braves would finally deliver their answer, however, canning eight of their last nine field goal attempts to fuel a half-ending 17-7 run that made it a 30-30 stalemate at the half. |
3RD QUARTER |
Columbus State led for much of the first 90 seconds of the second stanza, but Avery Locklear's old-fashioned 3-point play with 6:22 left tied the game at 37 apiece. The Cougars used a small scoring spurt to push their advantage out to 49-44 with 38 seconds left, but ShaNyia Lester's cut UNCP's deficit back to just one possession at the buzzer. |
4TH QUARTER |
The Cougars scored 20 of the first 28 points in the final period and took their largest lead of the night, 69-54, on a jumper from Tatiana Wayne with 3:41 remaining. The Braves closed the gap and got to within eight points, 72-64, on ShaNyia Lester's jumper with 13-seconds left, but were unable to fill the rest of the void. |
