Columbus State Pulls Away Late, Tops Women’s Basketball

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Columbus State scored 16 points off of 20 turnovers by the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team and used a big fourth quarter to pull away for good on the way to a 72-64 victory over the Braves on Monday at the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Melanie Horne's 3-pointer with six minutes left in the first quarter gave the Braves a 7-5 lead, and Tee Graham pushed the advantage out to 10-5 with a trey just 45 seconds later. The Braves would go scoreless for the remainder of the opening period, and the Cougars would eventually take an 11-10 lead into the second quarter.
2ND QUARTER
Columbus State continued a big run into the second quarter andeventually took a 23-13 lead on a jumper from Anna Stewart with 4:50 left before the break. The Braves would finally deliver their answer, however, canning eight of their last nine field goal attempts to fuel a half-ending 17-7 run that made it a 30-30 stalemate at the half.
3RD QUARTER
Columbus State led for much of the first 90 seconds of the second stanza, but Avery Locklear's old-fashioned 3-point play with 6:22 left tied the game at 37 apiece. The Cougars used a small scoring spurt to push their advantage out to 49-44 with 38 seconds left, but ShaNyia Lester's cut UNCP's deficit back to just one possession at the buzzer.
4TH QUARTER
The Cougars scored 20 of the first 28 points in the final period and took their largest lead of the night, 69-54, on a jumper from Tatiana Wayne with 3:41 remaining. The Braves closed the gap and got to within eight points, 72-64, on ShaNyia Lester's jumper with 13-seconds left, but were unable to fill the rest of the void.
