No. 21 Baseball Rallies Back From Big Deficit, But Falls In Ninth

BREAKING: Saturday's baseball game now scheduled for 1 p.m. first pitch due to rain forecast.

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied all the way from a 10-run sixth-inning deficit to take a one-run lead into the ninth, but visiting Augusta took advantage of a costly error in the final frame to plate three unearned runs and upset the Braves, 18-16, on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Trey Jacobs drove in a pair of runs and scored twice on a perfect 5-for-5 night at the plate to lead UNCP (6-1, 0-1 PBC) which had its six-game win streak in Peach Belt Conference openers snapped with the result. Three other players registered multi-hit nights at the plate for the hosts, including Roberto Rivera drove in a run and scored once on a 3-for-5 hitting line.

Three players registered three hits apiece for the Jaguars (2-6, 1-3 PBC), including Zack Goble (3-for-4, 2 RBI) who shed his designated hitter role in the eighth to record the final two outs and pick up the win for the visitors as well.

Reliever Hank Simpson (0-1) took the tough-luck loss for the Braves after striking out two and allowing three unearned runs in the ninth. Ben Parr spelled Charlie Cochran with two on and none gone in the ninth and tacked up the final three outs to grab his first save of the season.

The Jaguars pounded out six hits and scored seven times in the sixth to forge a seemingly insurmountable 15-5 lead, but the Braves lit up the scoreboard for five runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth to go out in front, 16-15.

Augusta used a leadoff single from Goble, as well as an untimely error on an attempted sacrifice bunt in the ensuing at-bat, to get a pair of runners into scoring position, and then knotted the score back up on Timothy Gray's RBI single up the middle. Simpson struck out each of the next two batters and appeared to get out of the jam, but Mason Robertson laced a single up the middle with the next at-bat to bring two more runs across.

UNCP got its first two batters aboard in the bottom of the frame, but Parr retired the next three Braves in order to close out the win.

The squads will continue their weekend set on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
