PEMBROKE – Freshman
Cara Davis hit her first collegiate home run in the opener and classmate
Breezy Yelton logged her second-straight shutout in game two to lead the UNC Pembroke softball team past Limestone 7-6 and 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field in Pembroke.
The victories extend the Braves' (5-5) current winning streak to three and snap an 11-game skid against Limestone dating back to Feb. 27, 2001. The Saints (5-3) have now lost three straight since a perfect 5-0 start to the season.
Davis' first-inning home run accounted for one of UNCP's seven hits in game one, as six different Braves logged a base knock. Senior
Lexie Coxe was 2-for-3 at the dish, while
Taylor Gerhart joined the home run party with a two-run shot in the fifth.
A three-run bottom of the third gave the Black & Gold its first lead of the game at 4-2 and Gerhart's long ball extended the hosts' advantage to 6-2 after six innings of play. Three outs from defeat, the Saints' bats awoke in the seventh to score four runs on three hits, including a two-out, three-run home run to knot the game at 6-6 and force extras.
With two outs and a runner on third in the latter half of the eighth, Coxe beat out an infield single to plate
Mary Sells and secure the 7-6 UNCP victory. Yelton (2-1) picked up the win in relief after tossing one inning with one strikeout on just 12 pitches.
Yelton (3-1) picked up right where she left off in game two and logged her second-straight shutout in games she has started. The freshman allowed just five hits and struck out four Saints to lower her ERA to a team-best 2.83. Johnson and Epperson each picked up a pair of hits in the victory, while Gerhart hit her second home run in as many games.
???????Gerhart put UNCP on the board with a solo shot in the second and Johnson doubled the lead with an RBI double in the third. Johnson picked up her second RBI of the game with a single in the fifth and Coxe capped off the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.
The Braves are back in action on Sunday when they hit the road for the first time this season at Newberry. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex. Live video and stats links can be found at uncpsoftball.com.
