Women’s Basketball Uses 25-2 Run To Dismiss Clayton State In Final PBC Road Game

MORROW, Ga. – Senior Nyla Allen logged her sixth-career 20-point game and the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team bridged the gap between the second and third quarters with a 25-2 run to fuel a 53-47 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victory on Saturday afternoon on homecoming at The Loch.

It was the first win in Morrow for the Braves (10-14, 8-12 PBC) since the 2005-06 season, as the Black & Gold inches closer to locking up the eighth spot in the league race. One more UNCP win or one Young Harris loss in the final two games will send the Braves to the PBC Tournament for the second-consecutive season. The setback was the second straight for the Lakers (13-13, 10-10 PBC) who have already clinched a spot in the conference tourney.

Allen's 20-point effort gives her double-digit points in 20-straight games dating back to Dec. 10 and the senior grabbed four rebounds in the win. Aliyah Farmer registered her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards, while Tee Graham came down with a career-best 10 rebounds as well.

With Saturday's defensive effort, the Braves have now held opponents to a season-low point total in three of the last four games, and UNCP limited Clayton State to 24.3 percent from the field, which is a season-low for the Black & Gold defense.

Abreyln Rackley paced the hosts with 18 points on 7-of-20 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double, but no other Laker scored more than seven points or made more than two field goals.

Clayton State went ahead 16-11 early in the second quarter, but the Braves rattled off a 25-2 run in the final 7:22 of the second quarter and first 3:13 of the third to take a 36-18 lead that they would not relinquish. The Lakers whittled the UNCP lead down to 10 at the end of the third and to as little as three with 42 seconds to play, but Graham knocked down four freebies in the final 24 seconds to ice the game.

The Braves are back in action Wednesday when PBC rival Francis Marion makes the short trip to Pembroke. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. on the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Patriots (14-11, 11-9 PBC) dropped a 64-52 affair to Flagler on Saturday, but knocked off UNCP 82-63 when the sides met on Jan. 24 in Florence.
