Sixth-Inning Rally Helps No. 17 Columbus State Clinch Weekend With No. 15 Baseball

COLUMBUS, Ga.Connor Grainger's 3-run dinger in the top of the sixth rallied the 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team back from a 5-2 deficit, but 17th-ranked Columbus State plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to fuel a series-clinching 9-6 victory over the Braves on Saturday at Burger King Stadium.

Fred Stewart hit a pair of solo homers in his collegiate debut for the Braves (13-5, 6-5 PBC), but the rest of the batting order for the visitors was limited to just five hits. It was the 11th-straight victory for the Cougars (17-2, 5-0) who got three hits apiece from both Will Hodges (3-for-4, RBI) and Grant Berry (3-for-5, RBI).

Gunner Deal (3-1) struck out two and surrendered three earned runs to take the loss in relief for the Black & Gold, while CSU reliever Sheridan Coy (1-0) grabbed the win with one inning of scoreless relief. Jalen Latta struck out two and allowed just one earned run over the final 2-1/3 innings to tack up his first save of the campaign.

Berry scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the fifth to give CSU a 5-2 advantage, but Grainger capped off a two-out rally in the sixth with a towering homer to left field that evened things back up. Garrett Kirkwood's two-run blast in the bottom of the frame would put the Cougars out in front for good, however.

The Cougars stretched their lead out to four runs, 9-5, on a RBI double from Will Hodges in the eighth, but Stewart capped off the scoring in the ninth with a solo homer off of a two-strike offering from Latta.

The Black & Gold will look to salvage the series on Sunday in the series finale at Burger King Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
